Business Tradelines: What They Are and How They Can Help You Build Credit

Tradelines are the raw material of your business credit file. Here is how to add the right ones and avoid the shortcuts that backfire.

A tradeline is simply a credit relationship recorded on your business credit file: who extended credit, how much, and whether you paid on time. Your business credit score is nothing more than a summary of your tradelines. If your file is thin, it is not because your business is bad — it is because nobody has reported on you yet.

The two kinds of tradelines

Vendor (trade) tradelines come from suppliers who let you buy now and pay in 30 days — office supplies, packaging, fuel, uniforms, building materials. Financial tradelines come from lenders and card issuers: business credit cards, term loans, lines of credit, and equipment notes.

Both matter, but they carry different weight. Vendor tradelines are the easiest to obtain and establish payment history. Financial tradelines carry far more weight with underwriters because they show you can service structured debt.

Who is keeping score

  • Dun & Bradstreet — PAYDEX score, 0 to 100, driven almost entirely by whether you pay early, on time, or late. Requires a D-U-N-S number.
  • Experian Business — Intelliscore Plus, 1 to 100, blending payment behavior, credit utilization, and public records.
  • Equifax Business — separate payment index, credit risk score, and business failure score.
  • FICO SBSS — 0 to 300, used heavily in SBA and bank underwriting; blends business and personal credit.

Critically, not every vendor reports to every bureau, and many report to none. A perfect twelve-month payment record with a supplier who does not report does nothing for your score.

Building a file in the right order

  1. 1Set the foundation. Register the entity, get an EIN, open a dedicated business checking account, and secure a D-U-N-S number. Keep your legal name, address, and phone identical everywhere — mismatches fragment your file.
  2. 2Open three to five reporting vendor accounts. Start with net-30 suppliers you already buy from and confirm in writing that they report.
  3. 3Pay early, not just on time. PAYDEX rewards early payment specifically; paying on the due date caps you around 80.
  4. 4Add a financial tradeline. A business credit card or a small line of credit adds the category vendors cannot.
  5. 5Keep utilization under 30%. High balances on revolving tradelines depress scores even with perfect payment history.
  6. 6Monitor quarterly. Errors are common, and disputes take weeks to resolve.

The shortcut that usually backfires

You will find companies selling "seasoned tradelines" — adding your business as an authorized user on someone else's aged account to inherit its history. Treat this as a red flag. Bureaus increasingly filter these lines, underwriters recognize the pattern, and a file that looks manufactured invites manual review of everything else. Some arrangements cross into misrepresentation on a credit application, which is a far bigger problem than a thin file.

There is no legitimate version of buying a credit history. The good news is that the honest path is fast: a business that starts today with four reporting vendor accounts and one financial tradeline typically has a usable file within six to nine months.

Why it is worth the effort

  • Better pricing on borrowing — a strong file can move you into lower-cost products entirely.
  • Larger limits and higher approval odds without additional collateral.
  • Vendor terms that improve your working capital cycle for free.
  • Lower insurance premiums in states and lines where business credit is a rating factor.
  • Reduced reliance on personal guarantees as the file matures.
